Each piece of cut glass is wrapped around the edge with copper foil strip and the solder melted along the foil on the surface of each side of the panel. This lead then forms a handmade framework that holds the glass together and it is usually given a black patina.
This results is a flexible but watertight panel of glass. These panels can be installed in both timber and aluminium joinery and are particularly useful for privacy purposes. Small panels may be hung in windows and are then able to be moved when moving house whereas panels installed in the joinery, of course, are not easily able to be moved.
Large glass panels generally take a month to construct after agreement has been reached on the design. Installation may be by Alison or by the client’s own installer under careful direction. Smaller panels may be freighted to other areas, but logistics preclude making panels to be installed out of Hamilton. |
